Many rooms have their own private shower and toilet; all have tea and coffee making facilities, telephone, free ethernet internet connection and a refrigerator. The college’s accommodation also includes standard single study bedrooms and our popular twin ‘sets’. Standard Rooms have shared bathroom and toilet facilities between approximately four rooms. Please note that not all facilities may be available on the same floor as your room. You may have to go up- or downstairs to find the nearest facilities.
Please note Single Standard Rooms are mainly up several flights of stairs and there are no lifts in any accommodation buildings. If you have mobility difficulties and require a low floor room, please make a note of this in the 'Additional Notes' section when making your booking. There are no lifts to the accommodation. So, please let us knowif there are any accessibility needs when you make your booking and we will endeavour to accommodate your requirements. There is, however, a lift to the Great Hall where breakfast is served. We will do our best to support other special access needs, bearing in mind the constraints of historic buildings.
History to the present day
Christ Church, is one of the largest and grandest of Oxford’s colleges. It was founded by Henry VIII in 1546. The most ambitious plans, which led to the grandest buildings, were those of Henry’s Lord Chancellor, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. He laid out the Great Quadrangle, the kitchen and the Great Hall, which were completed by 1529 and have not been substantially altered since. Significant additions to the college’s architectural heritage have occurred over the centuries.
Of the various buildings which compose Christ Church, the oldest is the 12th century collegiate Cathedral, originally the conventual church of St Frideswide’s priory. Almost as ancient as the Cathedral, and on its southern side is the Chapter House, part Norman but mainly 13th century. The cloister was rebuilt in about 1499 and the former monastic refectory, which forms the southern boundary of the cloister, housed the college library from 1561. After the New Library was opened in the 18th century the refectory building was converted into residential rooms. This nucleus of ancient priory buildings, much restored and altered, is all that escaped demolition when in 1525 Cardinal Wolsey set about his ambitious scheme for Cardinal College which was later refounded by Henry VIII as Aedes Christi, that is: Christ Church.
Christ Church boasts many famous alumni including thirteen former British Prime Ministers. Charles Dodgson, whose pen name was Lewis Carroll, the author of 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Alice through the Looking Glass' was also a member of Christ Church. There are many Alice-related things to see at Christ Church and, of course, the first Harry Porter film was staged, in part, in the Great Hall and Hall staircase.
Food and Drinks
A Full English Breakfast is provided each morning between 0800-0900hrs. Breakfast is served in the unique setting of the Great Hall with its stunning hammer beam roof and wonderful oil paintings.
There is a delightful college bar called the Buttery where drinks may be purchased in the early evening.
There are lots of restaurants, bars and cafés nearby or it may be possible to book lunch and/or dinner in the Great Hall subject to availability.
Grounds and gardens
Christ Church is unique amongst the Oxford Colleges for its wonderful meadow which has remained unchanged for centuries. The Meadow is full of wildlife and is home to Christ Church's own long-horn cattle. There is a beautiful tree-lined walk down to the river Isis and there are lots of grass areas which lend themselves to a picnic or are a perfect setting to while away the day with a book. We are also a pleasant walk from the well-known Botanical Gardens. It is also possible to hire a punt or rowing boat nearby.
Other facilities
A light and bright common room with comfy chairs is available to our guests. Here you can relax and have a cup of coffee or tea, browse through the newspapers, read a book, watch TV in the adjacent room or check your email.

Miss Jenny Rogers, July 2013: An absolutely fabulous experience from start to finish. So cheap for B&B (£50), brilliant staff, massive room, beautiful setting, and breakfast at high table in CC Great Hall: you CANNOT ask for more. Thoroughly recommended, and I will definitely come again! 5/5

Dr Jessie McGowan, March 2013: Wonderful! 5/5
Mrs june hendy, March 2013: Lovely environment, good food, polite efficient staff. Would have liked to have had a hairdryer in the room but I am sure if I had asked a Porter, one would have been foundl 5/5

Mrs Caroline De Brun, March 2013: Absolutely splendid. I paid the lowest price, and so my room was basic, but very clean and spacious. The experience of being within the walls of Christchurch College was amazing, and I was even able to participate in Evensong, which was beautiful. As for the breakfast, well, that was outstanding. Delicious, fresh, and such a stunning environment, with welcoming open fires. I only came back last night, but have already recommended it to 5 people as a fabulous place to stay in Oxford. Thank you. Caroline De Brun 5/5

Mrs Valerie Harrison, March 2013: Thank you for a great stay 4/5
Ms Margaret Munro, March 2013: Good sized top-floor room & en-suite, with a lovely outlook. Scruffy furnishings typical of student accomodation. It would have been useful to know how many stairs there were (in fact over 60). Fabulous setting and breakfast in the Great Hall. Unbeatable. 4/5
Mr john bamfield, March 2013: We very much enjoyed the room and the college setting. It added considerably to the experience of the Literary Festival 5/5
Ms Alice O' Flynn, March 2013: It's a great experience staying in Christ Church..the personnel, accommodation and setting was just so lovely....
the only issue was the internet connection was a wee bit problematic at times 5/5
Mr Dominic Chetwode Clarke, March 2013: A very enjoyable experience and a something of a privilege to be admitted, albeit briefly, into an otherwise esoteric academic sanctum. 5/5
Mr James Nairne, March 2013: Clean and comfortable in a lovely college. Loved the Breakfast experience (Good choice of cereals - always my test) - although a bit cattle-like as hugely full for Oxford Literary Festival! 5/5
Mrs Lara Maxwell, March 2013: I had a wonderful stay at Christ Church. While it was a typical dorm room (Peckwater Quad), it was larger than I expected and quite comfortable. The staff were excellent - always friendly and helpful. There was a large selection at breakfast, the food was good, but the best part was sitting in the Hall, soaking up the history. The College buildings are beautiful and I really enjoyed exploring the grounds. Highly recommend a stay here! 5/5
Miss Nicola Gollan, March 2013: A lovely stay, as always! 5/5
Prof Tetsuo Yoshimoto, March 2013: The staff responded our request regarding the room professionally. It was a great service that I expect from a 5-star accommodation. The dinner at Christ Church was above our expectation, and is definitely a top-lanked in Oxford. 5/5
Ms Jessy Morton, March 2013: I didn't have breakfast but enjoyed a superb dinner! My son is very jealous (he is 7yrs old) as I didn't bring him to the Harry Potter hall with me!
Thank you so much for your service! 5/5
Mrs Laraine Sowden, March 2013: Our first visit to Oxford was very enjoyable and made even more so by staying at Christ Church. The whole experience was very special. From evensong in the Cathedral, to our rooms and breakfast in the superb Dining Hall - all very good. Would highly recommend staying and would definitely book again. 5/5
Miss Dorthe Andersen, March 2013: I assume this is for the 3 course dinner, I had on the 16th in the hall at Christ Church. It was a very good experience. The place is absolutely beautiful, the food was nice and there was such interesting dinner conversation. A very nice evening, 5/5
Mrs Linda Mullen, March 2013: A thoroughly enjoyable stay. Enhanced our visit to the book festival. Many thanks .p.s. Would have been helpful to have the option of requesting a room facing the Meadows at the time of booking. 4/5
Mrs june hendy, March 2013: Excellent choice of delicious food. The Great Hall is a fantastic place in which to have a meal. All members of staff polite, efficient and helpful. Very clean room. It would have been appreciated if a hairdryer was available in the room but I expect the Porters would have magiced one up if asked! It was magical to draw the curtains on Sunday morning and see falling snow transforming the House into an even more beautiful place. 5/5
Mrs Sue Powell, March 2013: We only booked dinner which was excellent service and food and would definately do again sometime. Website is difficult to work out first time just for a meal booking. So room comments not applicable. Thank you. 3/5

Mrs Joanne Walters, September 2012: I had a very enjoyable stay. The experience was much more exciting than similar-priced or more expensive accomodation in Oxford. 5/5
Mr David Sidwell, September 2012: A wonderful experience 5/5
Ms Katherine Watson, September 2012: Fantastic double room in Meadows Hall of ChristChurch. Such a privilege to have access to the stunning building and grounds, cooked breakfast as a vegetarian was quite limited but plenty of fruit and cereal. Would definitely recommend and will use again. Mrs Marie Finkelman, September 2012: With your wonderfully thorough descriptions and reasonable prices, I found accommodations that perfectly fit my travel needs. Thank you!! 5/5
Mr Graham Shirbon, August 2012: The whole experience was very good indeed, The ambiance e of the college was particularly good and all the staff were helpful. My wife and I particularly liked being surrounded by Christ Church College's historic buildings and the tranquil atmosphere they created.
We would definitely do another visit. 4/5
Ms Liz Romer, August 2012: The whole experience was brilliant. Staff and Porters very helpful. Only stayed one night, wish it could have been longer. 5/5
Ms Mary MacKenzie, August 2012: I did not want to leave! I loved staying there.
Very quiet, great computer lab, convenient laundry available
and everyone knew me to let me in and out, very helpful staff. Easy walk to train station. Great walking course beside the campus. 5/5
Mr Alan Gowers, August 2012: Very enjoyable experience 5/5
Mr Douglas Crook, August 2012: We were given a very pleasant room with a balcony overlooking the Meadows.
The porters were very helpful about storing olur luggage between checking out of the room in the morning and us leaving Oxford in the afternooon. 5/5
Mrs Marilla Price, August 2012: I stayed in five colleges throughout my stay in Oxford and Christchurch was by far, superior in so many ways. The porters went out of their way to be helpful, the room was most comfortable and other staff either at the entrance gate or throughout the College were always very friendly. I would have stayed at Christchurch the whole time if there had been a room. This would be my only complaint! I will be making the trip from Sydney to Oxford again and will definitely make sure that I stay in Christchurch. 5/5
Mr Garth Hall, August 2012: The atmosphere of Christ Church was wonderful, especially as you experienced it after the crowds had left. Having breakfast in the Great Hall was also a great experience although the staff were a little too prompt in removing the plates, jams, milk etc while you were still eating from them!! The standard of the food was a little too much "canteen" style, though I guess this is inevitable when mass catering. The bedroom was a good size and very clean and modern. We were slightly disappointed that the room itself didn't have more "character". The porters on the gate were very friendly and helpful.
Overall a very enjoyable experience. 4/5
Dr Wolfgang Konrad, August 2012: The porters were exceptionally friendly and helpful. One even escorted us to the Meadows Building very late at night. They must be very proud to be working at Christ Church. Many thanks
Wolfgang Konrad 4/5
Miss Christine Calais, July 2012: Very good quality for the price. To have an English breakfast in the Great Hall was just fabulous.
Staying for two nights, I've got two free tickets for the Jubilee Concerts with the room: classical music in Tom Quad, outside. Not very good sound because of the wind and the rain. But interessant to see all the people fighting against cold and humidity with all the means they found!
A tip: I booked a standard student room, not ensuite, to stay in the old buildings. I've got 2 rooms: bedroom and lounge. Talking with Christ Church alumni, here for a reunion: had very small ensuite rooms in Meadows Building.
I would like to thank the very helpful people at the Lodge. As the first room was not cleaned, they changed my room, taking my luggage to the other room. And give me a lot of tea to fight against cold! 4/5
Mrs Marie-Laure GOUNIN, July 2012: The room was very nice, very clean. Departure time (9:00am) is a little bit too early, but the porters were flexible and accepted 9:30/10:00 which was nice! The saturday night Jubilee concert was an experience I shall never forget. 5/5
Mr Helmuth Habermann, June 2012: We had a delightful time in Oxford, and what a treat to stay at Christ Church College. The breakfast was excellent, as were the accommodations, and we were able to experience a concert in honor of the Queen also. Great value for the money. 5/5
Mr Jonathan Lontayao, June 2012: We were very happy with the opportunity to stay at an Oxford College, the deal, and also the website. We would very happily recommend using this site, and will look at this site again for future trips. 5/5
Ms jacquelyne tooes, June 2012: This was an excellent experience for my daughter and myself, the college is amazing. We were attending a family party and booked here because most of the hotels were fully booked I am so pleased that they were as we would never have thought of coming to Christ Church. We also attended the Jubilee Concert which was in the setting of Tom Quad and fabulous. The cherry on the cake was breakfast in the hall what a
fantastic place. I very much look forward to coming back as it was breath taking experience. Thank you Christ Church 5/5
Mr Martin Floyd, April 2012: Very happy with the whole experience 5/5
Mrs Wendy Allsop, April 2012: A great venue. A very special experience. 5/5
Ms Doreen Greene, April 2012: I had room on ground floor & close to toilet. Room very comfortable and warm. We all enjoyed our stay. hope to visit again next year.D.V.
Many thanks for your help, particularly Carly. Doreen Greene 5/5
Ms alice o' flynn, April 2012: I had a very enjoyable stay in Christ Church university accommodation - the place itself is spectacular and the university staff that were round were very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend anyone visiting Oxford to stay in CC 5/5
Ms deborah morgan, April 2012: Fantastic location and a wonderful experience. There was a lot of noise outside our room in the early hours (saturday night) but for just 1 night this wasn't a big problem. The overall experience was really good. 4/5
Mr Frank Dewar, April 2012: Very enjoyable stay again. Many thanks to all concerned and for accommodating others in our party in close proximity. 5/5
Mrs Marie Lindo, April 2012: Overall a lovely experience 5/5
Mr Charlie Ramsay, April 2012: Very enjoyable experience. My only comment would be that you might consider improving the quality of the pillow cases and duvet cover which my wife pointed out weren't very soft. You might also consider bed covers. Overall excellent, however. 5/5
Mrs Jane Russ, April 2012: Another wonderful stay - thank you. 5/5
Mrs christine hughes, March 2012: This is the second time we have visited Oxford using your website. The service is very good and there are no problems at all. 5/5
Dr Alexander Macfie, March 2012: Very interesting place to stay, thou inevitably a bit old fashioned 4/5
Mrs Henrietta Knight, March 2012: There were 5 of us staying in the rooms and we all enjoyed our stay for the Oxford Literary Festival. We shall hopefully be back next year. Thanks. 4/5
Mrs Debbie Grantham, March 2012: Better room this year. Always great to come to Oxford 4/5
Mr Mike Lynch, March 2012: My wife and I very much enjoyed our visit. What made it a particularly pleasant stay was the straightforward, unobtrusive helpfulness of the staff.
Many thanks. 4/5
Mr Richard Stokes, March 2012: Brilliant location! Thanks 4/5
Mrs Julie West, March 2012: A very enjoyable stay but a slightly late checkout time would have been appreciated 5/5
Mrs Ute Oswald, March 2012: Loved staying in beautiful Christ Church College. Rooms very clean and our Peckwater Quod double twin very spacious. Basic, but that was to be expected. Staff v friendly too. Only negative was the awful noise outside our bedrooms. It was a Saturday night and you could hear ever word from people regularly passing by underneath our windows, well into the early hours of the morning. Apart from that, I couldn't fault it. 4/5
Mrs G F Underhay, April 2011: I had requested an extra pillow and that was waiting for me. This year a lift had been installed up to the hall, which made life a lot easier. I find the amount of walking very daunting, especially as there are no seats around the quads. I hope to be able to visit again next year. 4/5
Cathy Honan, April 2011: a
most enjoyable experience will be booking again for next years festival
and will recommend it to friends 5/5
Dalla Jenney, April 2011: It was an absolute joy and a privilege to stay in such unbelievably beautiful and historic surroundings. Our room had the most superb view across Christ Church Meadows and was lovely and warm and spacious.
The only thing that was unclear from the booking was whether breakfast was included (it was). 4/5
Debbie Grantham, April 2011: Being an Oxford college the setting looks very grand but the rooms are very dismal with all the nearly black wooden panelling and old furniture. However it must be a challenge to merge the old with the new.
We love Oxford 4/5
Mr Keith Hambly-Staite, April 2011: A mixed experience. Impeccable surroundings; some friendly staff but some rather officious. Good food. Worth the visit because of the history of the place but much more commercial than other colleges. 4/5
Mrs CLARE JONES, April 2011: excellent experience staying in the college. I should recommend highly , and look forward to next festival 5/5
Mrs J S Roe, April 2011: A unique experience which we very much enjoyed. 4/5
Marie Tolstad, April 2011: i did need to request towels and coffe......
the porters and generally everyone was helpful and friendly
computer room was very handy..thank you
4/5
Aoibheann McCann, April 2011: Porters were delightful . Room lovely . Could have done with a hairdryer and another table lamp . Fridge very noisy.
Overall had a lovely time , will come again thanks. 5/5
Frank Farmer, April 2011: We enjoyed the festival very much. The room was a bit spartan and in our mid-seventies, we were a bit thrown when we found that the only WC serving eight rooms on three landings was in the basement! Otherwise, everything was fine, thank you. Frank Faremer 4/5
dennis knowles, April 2011: An excellent 2 days wonderful accommodation- vibrant speakers- definite value for money!! Roll on next year !My we have the same room? 5/5
Dr Ruth Deroy, April 2011: Oxford at it's best 4/5
Judy Spring, April 2011: Really enjoyed the event and accommodation - Christ Church College is a real joy to stay. Even though not a 'luxury' venue, the quintessential historical environment makes up for any luxury elements. Our room was clean, tidy and housekeeping arrangements excellent. 4/5
Ms Jilly Szaybo, April 2011: I had an exceptionally pleasant stay, in unusual and comfortable rooms.
Everyone we encountered was courteous, and helpful to a degree. About the rooms: a bedside lamp would have been appreciated ( no socket) and the walls were a bit shabby and colourless, like old porridge. I wouldn't have wanted to stay a week in there, but a short stay was fine! Thank you for the freedom of the college, which we really loved. 4/5
Dr Eva Tyson, April 2011: I enjoyed it immensely and staying at Christ Church was an added bonus.
Another bonus was Evensong. I am already planning to return next year. 5/5
Susan Fowles, April 2011: I went with a friend & we both had an excellent time. The standard was excellent & we will both go again & recommend it to others. Please provide any information about similar events. 5/5
